We have also got a few movies we think you'd like to see, in particular the world première of "As Old As My Tongue: The Myth and Life of Bi Kidude".

The week before the festival, invited musicians get together to explore common ground and differences. As their contributions fuse, something special is born – watch out for the resulting performances.

Seminar - Marketing East African Music

This is open to East African artists & music industry professionals only. If this sounds like you, and then please contact us for further details.

Photo Exhibition

Following the interest and response to the 2006 exhibition "Where the music takes me", and knowing that there are some fantastic snaps out there, we've invited photographers from all over the world to share their pictures of Zanzibari performers abroad and visiting performers in Zanzibar, for what promises to be a stimulating sequel.

Festival Finalé

For the last night we leave the town behind and head for a beautiful white sand beach on Zanzibar's north coast. There'll be acrobats, performances and we finish-up with one almighty party. Bring a Valentine – or dance til dawn!

Where It's At

Sekembuke under blue skiesSauti za Busara music festival brings people together of all ages, in celebration of the wealth and diversity of Swahili music. Its reputation is growing fast. Festival Main Stage is constructed in between the banana trees, behind the ancient walls of Stone Town’s Old Fort, a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site. Facing the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, with many of the world’s finest white sandy beaches within easy striking distance and average daily temperatures of around 30C, Zanzibar makes for an unbeatable location. Early evening the waterfront gardens in front of the Fort come alive with the friendly banter of the Swahili- speaking locals and sizzling aromas of freshly grilled seafood. The people of East Africa look forwards with pride to February every year, when Zanzibar hosts "the friendliest festival on the planet."

Making it possible

The festival organisers are delighted to acknowledge the generous support from our donors and sponsors, without whom the festival would not be possible. This stage of preparation is always a budgeting nightmare for us. We've received some promises and still need more. So far, Festival 2007 is powered by:

Ford Foundation, Swiss Agency for Development & Cooperation, Celtel Tanzania, Holiday Inn, British Council, Embassy of France, Art Moves Africa, CulturesFrance,

fROOTS Magazine, Embassy of Germany, Archipelago Café & Restaurant, Mercury's Restaurant, Tabasam Tours, Kendwa Rocks, Ultimate Security, Zanzibar Gallery, Jubilee Insurance, Roger Fenstein, and Zanzibar.NET

Call for Sponsorship

The festival would not be possible without the generous support of our donors and sponsors – both financial and 'in kind'.

To all potential donors and sponsors, we have prepared a Funding Partnership pack, including a promotional video, our festival proposal, budget and a list of ingenious ways that your name can be seen as part of the Festival's success. If you are interested please contact us.

Help spread the word

If you have the opportunity to promote the Sauti za Busara festival we’d very much like your help. Maybe you have a mailing list, a website, a notice board or advertising space? A few words of recommendation and a link to our website will always be appreciated. In return, we can put you on our links page. We can also supply you with posters if it’s not too expensive.

She will also be talking about the forthcoming feature documentary film As Old As My Tongue, produced by ScreenStation UK.

This is an intimate portrait of Bi Kidude, living legend and probably the oldest performer on the world music stage today. Bi Kidude wins friends wherever she travels, but at home in Zanzibar she continually courts controversy, her behaviour challenges perceptions of a woman’s position in a Muslim society. As Old As My Tongue reveals the dramatic contrasts in the life of this iconic musician and features a classic soundtrack comprising one hundred years of Swahili music.

A fine old Zanzibari chest (photo Peter Bennett)

A fine old Zanzibari chest

Hey guess what? Here's a chance to win a striking Sauti za Busara t-shirt and a bunch of other goodies (including a brief video on SzB2006)…  All you have to do is answer the following question:

The name of the festival, "Sauti za Busara" roughly translates into English as "Sounds of Wisdom", but from which language?

Send us the answer, along with your name before the end of November. Each correct entry will be attached individually to a coconut and placed in an enormous, old, brass-studded, brown-coloured, wooden Zanzibari chest which will be shaken vigorously. The winning entries will be the first five drawn from the chest (assuming the coconuts have not leaked) – and the winners will be informed by email and listed on our website.

Ready to enter? Then send us an email with "November Competition" in the subject.

Unfortunately there was a problem in the mail service we were using, and some of our friends were swamped with numerous messages which became intolerable. We apologise for the irritation and annoyance this might have caused and would like to reassure you that we have now changed our mail service – so hopefully it will never happen again. Thank you for bearing with us.
