Warm greetings from sunny Zanzibar. The 8th Sauti za Busara (Sounds of Wisdom) music festival

 Looks set to bring another “good news story” for Africa. Stone Town is gearing up in excitement as

World music promoters, culture vultures and journalists from all around the globe will soon be arriving in Zanzibar to check out what’s cooking in the East Africa music scene.

For five days during 9 - 13 February the main stage in Zanzibar’s Old Fort showcases live performances with around forty of the finest music groups from East Africa and beyond, including:

From Wednesday through till Sunday, around eight groups perform each day. Big names rub shoulders with upcoming artists. Thirty of the best music groups of Zanzibar, Tanzania and East Africa shares the stage with another dozen groups representing Mozambique, South Africa, La Réunion, Mauritius, Cameroon, Benin, Guinea Conakry and Senegal.
All music on the main stage is performed live. Shows start at 5:00pm, continuing virtually non-stop,  with the final band taking to the stage around midnight. For local people, admission is free until 6:00pm, thereafter around €1 (one euro), see Tickets and Prices. More than 5,000 attend each day, with 75% people from the region and others from all over Africa, Asia, Europe and beyond.

Sauti za Busara is the THE East African music event and widely known as ‘the friendliest festival on the planet’.

Carnival Street Parade

Carnival Street Parade: Kicking off from Busara Promotions’ office in Maisara (Airport Road) at 2pm on Weds 9th February will be the largest ever carnival parade seen on the island, with stilt- walkers, acrobats, mdundiko, ngoma dancers and beni brass band all marching through the streets to arrive at the Old Fort around 4.30pm. What Else Is Going On?

Swahili Encounters: Four days of artistic collaborations, for invited local and visiting musicians who get to reinterpret Swahili songs and present these on main stage. See Swahili Encounters.

Swahili Encounters

Seminars and Training Workshops: building skills for artists, managers, music journalists, filmmakers, sound and lighting technicians from the East Africa region.

Movers & Shakers: Daily networking forum for local and visiting arts professionals.

African Music Films:  For four nights starting Thursday 10th until Sunday 13th February, the Old Fort’s Amphitheatre will be turned into the African Music Film Cinema. Come and watch under the stars the best music videos and shorts from the continent between 7pm and 8pm. Then at 8.20pm and 9:50pm two feature length African Music documentaries will be screened nightly from Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, DRC, Uganda, Tanzania & Zanzibar. Click here for more information

Festival marketplace: local food and drinks, music, jewellery, clothing and handicrafts.

Busara Xtra: Around the festival, the island is buzzing with a range of fringe events: traditional ngoma drum and dance, fashion shows, dhow races, open-mic sessions, after-parties and performances of Zanzibar’s oldest taarab orchestras are all arranged by the local community. See Busara Xtra.
