Sauti za Busara 2015 festival audience

During 12 –15 February 2015, Sauti za Busara brought together people from across the world in a sea of humanity to celebrate the richness of African music. Festival venues in Stone Town, Zanzibar were full to capacity all four nights of the event.

The theme for this 12th edition was “Together as One, Amani Ndio Mpango Mzima!
Loud and clear, the message was received: with peace and unity, Africa is the Future!

On the opening day, streets in Stone Town were brought to a standstill with the arrival of the largest and most colourful Festival Parade to date. Some of the countless musical highlights over the next four days included Blitz the Ambassador (Ghana/USA), Djmawi Africa (Algeria), Liza Kamikazi and band (Rwanda), Sarabi (Kenya), The Brother Moves On and Ihhashi Elimhlophe (South Africa), Tcheka (Cape Verde), Mim Suleiman (Zanzibar/UK), Tsiliva and Mpamanga (Madagascar), Thaïs Diarra ft. Noumoucounda Cissoko (Switzerland/Senegal/Mali), Aline Frazão (Angola), Octopizzo and band (Kenya), Isabel Novella (Mozambique), Alikiba, Msafiri Zawose, Leo Mkanyia, Tunaweza Band, Mohamed Ilyas & Nyota Zameremeta, Rico Single & Swahili Vibes and Cocodo African Music (Tanzania).

The Old Fort’s amphitheatre was also full every night, where local and visiting audiences enjoyed a programme of African music films, including The Last Song before the War, Maramaso, 100% Dakar and the world premiere of Andy Jones’ I Shot Bi Kidude’.

Meanwhile almost a hundred music professionals, including artists, managers, promoters and media representatives connected at the Movers & Shakers daily networking sessions, to discuss ways forward for African music in the local and global arena.

Fourteen of 19 Tanzanian groups participated in the Songs for Peace competition. As commented by Tabu Osusa, the Jury Chairman; ‘‘Songs for Peace was a brilliant concept. I was amazed at the rich and diverse music traditions Tanzania had and at the high quality of professional musicians who took part in the competition.’’

Songs for Peace competition winners were as follows:-

Culture Musical Club (Zanzibar) - won Gold with the song Amani Tanzania.
Tunaweza Band (Tanzania) - won Silver with the song Amani.
Rico Single (Zanzibar) - won Bronze with the song Amani Ndio Furaha Yetu.
Leo Mkanyia (Tanzania) – recognized for exceptional performance with the song Linda Amani.

The artists as listed share 10,000,000/- TSh prize money, for producing studio recordings of the winning songs.
