Hoko Roro was formed by talented singer, songwriter and dancer, Samuel Hokororo, who was born in 1990 in Temeke District, Dar es Salaam. He started singing when he was at eight years old, at school, home and in the church choir.
Samuel spent most of his time asking himself when his dream of having a band will come true. In 2006 he went to the Dogodogo center – a center for street children – and received training in theatre, dance and music. It was there that he learned to play the guitar. Samuel was an excellent student and since he left the Dogodogo center in 2008 he has been working full time in music, dance and theatre.
In 2011 his star started shining; he was selected as a dancer to participate at Visa2Dance festival and in the same year he went to perform in Uganda and Germany with Lumumba Theatre Group where he also received more training.
In 2012 he went to study for a year at the Dhow Country Music Academy (DCMA) in Zanzibar, but due to financial constraints he was forced to move back to Dar es Salaam to continue his daily music activities.
In 2013 he established his own band named “Hoko Roro” with his fellow musician, well-known Tanzanian percussionist, Mohamed Twaba, and Ilali Mohamed, a Calabash player and singer, with Samuel on guitar and lead vocals.
