Ogoya Nengo is a legendary Kenyan folk artist who has had an immense career spanning decades as a professional dodo singer. Her music is characterised by her powerful, passionate and compelling voice, backed by traditional drums and percussions, the one stringed orutu and the oporo horn.

Ogoya Nengo was born Anastasia Oluoch in the late 1930s, in Magoya, a small village near the shores of Lake Victoria. Born to a family of Luo singers and orators, she soon joined their trade and practice as social messengers and commentators, commonly referred to as dodo singers.

By age 12, Anastasia had realized much acclaim in her society and graced many important functions including weddings, funerals, and village gatherings. As the last born of seven children, all of whom were performers, Anastasia emerged as the one with most promise and was afforded the status as a full time dodo singer at the age of 13. It was then that she was given the name Ogoya Nengo meaning “The Priced One”. Ogoya and her sister Nyagor became the rave of their time, traversing the region with their music, singing to great chiefs, warriors, colonial officers and missionaries who were enraptured by their talent.

Although only starting her recording career over six decades later in 2008, Ogoya Nengo since receiving her name in her early teenage years has been a full time professional singer performing mostly in her village of Magoya.

In 2008 at the age of 70 years she had a chance encounter with renowned music producer and promoter, Tabu Osusa of Ketebul Music. Impressed and startled by Ogoya's captivating and mystical voice, Tabu visited her in Rang’ala, where she resides, to invite her to the studio. Ogoya Nengo came with her current team of Margaret Arango, Julianne Akoth, Wilfrida Anyango and Pelisse Achieng’ to lay down the makings of her debut studio album titled Matatu.

Since then she has graced the stage in South Africa, Mozambique, Germany, France, and Brazil, performing with the contemporary dance company, Gaara. Ogoya Nengo has also collaborated with top musicians and artists including contributing on “Osiepna”, a song featured on Kenyan vocalist Suzanna Owiyo latest album, My Roots. She is also featured in the album, The Kenya Sessions with German producer and electronic musician and percussionist, Sven Kacirek.

Matatu is in production and set to be released in 2012.
