Three musicians/dancers of Mozambique's young generation are at the centre of MO'SOME BIG NOISE, the newest music project of the Austrian trombonist Werner Puntigam. He formed a band, which combines rural and urban elements based on highly dynamic grooves (hiphop, drum 'n' bass and more) with an unconventional line up.

The sound of that ensemble is determined substantially by three timbilas, the traditional balafon-like instruments of the Chopi people of Southern Mozambique. Metchume Zango, Tinoca Zimba and Cheny Mahuaie Gune are all three also members of Timbila Muzimba, one of the most legendary groups in Mozambique. They play different sizes of timbila and percussions, but also sing and dance, and form with their timbila patterns a compact polyrhythmic sonority.

On the Austrian part: Werner Puntigam is not only blowing jazzy phrases on his trombone and conch shell, but also adding abstract and noisy sounds produced on his instruments and voice as a counterpoint element. And Adi Nimmerfall plays virtuoso flute solos as well as groovy lines on electric bass. "The word "noise" in the band's name stands for the big variety of sounds, sound colours and dynamics which can be produced with that outstanding line-up and crossover of traditional African sounds, up-to-date electronic grooves and experiment-avantgardistic", says Werner Puntigam.
