PolePole is a Tanzanian-Finnish duo founded in 1998 in Helsinki, who in Zanzibar will be joined by a special guest artist, percussionist Samuli Majamäki. Their music is dominated by the ten stringed kantele played solo by Arnold Chiwalala (also the composer, arranger, playing flute and lead vocals) or combined with acoustic guitar played by Topi Korhonen. Songs are performed in Kiswahili and Finnish language with philosophic message. Rhythm or polyrhythm is a major aspect in the music style of PolePole. Shakers, udu and cajon, played by Samuli Majamäki play a big role in emphasizing the percussive rhythm in the music. In addition, overtone flute and dance movements bring more dynamic in PolePole's repertoires. During its existence PolePole has been performing in and outside Finland at festivals, seminars, in clubs, museums and schools and at international events including the United Nations 2002 Gala and Africa 2002 in Helsinki, as well as for Radio and TV1 that made a documentary film about Arnold Chiwalala in Finland. Other festivals the group has participated in include Kaustinen Folk music festival 2002 (where PolePole was voted Band of the Year), Eurofolk festival by EBU (European Broadcast Union) in Germany 2002 and more. Arnold Chiwalala has performed and collaborated with many artists in music, dance and theatre projects in different countries, including Tanzania, Finland, England, Mozambique, Zambia and USA. We are very proud to feature PolePole at Sauti za Busara Festival for their first visit to Zanzibar.
