The Tune Recreation Committee is a formidable quintet, comprised of some of Cape Town’s finest young musicians. At the cutting edge of the South African jazz scene, the Tune Recreation Committee merge original tunes with nods from a wide palette of musical influences including drum and bass to Balkanology. Whether on a spiritually charged ghoma vibe or reinventing layer on layer around a melody, TRC present a playground for interrogation, assimilation and extended improvisation around the canon of a mighty South African jazz heritage.

TRC’s debut album Voices of Our Vision was one of New York Times Best Albums of 2017 and nominated by the South African Music Awards for Best Jazz Album. It also rated highly in Busara Promotions chart for Best Album of 2017. The same year, they performed to rousing applause at the 18th Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

Led by Mandla Mlangeni who plays trumpet, the group also features Clement Benny on drums, Nicholas Williams on bass, Reza Khota on guitar, Afrika Mkhize on piano, Mark Fransman on alto saxophone, flute and accordion.

“The Tune Recreation Committee avoids the most common pitfalls in South African jazz: It’s not beholden to sunny Cape Town traditionalism, and it doesn’t emulate any specific form of American jazz.” - New York Times
