Maallem Abdelkebir Merchane began studying the art of gnaoui at the age of nine, participating in lila spiritual gatherings.
His masters, Mohamed El Ayachi Bakbou Sam and Hmida Boussou initiated him into the purest form of the Tagnaouite tradition, and his current style includes Marsaoui and Marrakech.
He has released numerous recordings and participated in many festivals across Europe, the Arab world, Japan, India and beyond.
He has performed on stage with musicians including Mokhtar Samba, Jean Philippe Rykiel, Karim Ziad and others.
Merchane now leads the Ouled Sidi H’Mou group, comprising eight musicians based in the legendary city of Marrakech.
Founded in 1970, Ouled Sidi H’Mou is among the greatest cultural ambassadors of Gnawa art and music, worldwide. With thanks to Africa Art Lines
