A sorceress who casts hexes with words and sound waves, Yugen Blakrok grew up in South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Influenced by the political, militant and spiritual aspects of hiphop, her music is a deep lyrical and audio odyssey into the world around us, both seen and unseen.

Gaining recognition through various features and live shows, Yugen Blakrok has been on the South African music scene for over a decade. Her debut album ‘Return of the Astro-Goth’ (2013) was well received by the hiphop community worldwide. It also saw her nominated at the SA HipHop Awards 2014, in the categories for Best Lyricist, Best Newcomer and Best Female.

Blakrok’s sound is a mix of sci-fi soundscapes, hard drums and meditative melodies, over which her conscious and lyrical word delivery command vivid attention. Her music features on several international collaborations, most notably on the Black Panther soundtrack, where she appears alongside Vince Staples and Kendrick Lamar.

Her second album ‘Anima Mysterium’ was released in 2019. It has been described as ferocious, uncompromising, strange, ominous, magical and mystical.

“Yugen Blakrok stands in a lane disinterested in the fads or fashions of the West – and she’s all the more intriguing for it”

    -      Tara Joshi, The Quietus

“Yugen Blakrok is mighty in impact, and no one else right now is in quite the same aesthetic universe”

    -      Adriane Pontecorvo, Pop Matters
