Tandaa Traditional Group
Country Zanzibar Genres coastal fusion traditional Festival Sauti za Busara 2012 This exciting experimental collaboration, only recently established in 2011, is one of its kind, lead by talented Zanzibari musician and composer Juma Begu. The tandaa is a traditional flute, similar to the zumari. It is typically played alongside ngoma drums in the island’s umundi dance, used to purge evil spirits.
As a specialist player and maker of the tandaa, Juma Begu has been invited to perform extensively with the island’s favourite groups around the region and in Spain, France, Sweden and Holland. Encouraged by the international reception of the unique and mesmerising tandaa, he decided to form his own group with five other talented musicians – at least three of whom play the tandaa.
