He takes his griot heritage seriously, being the grandson of Alhaji Bai Konte and son of Amadou Bansang Jobarteh. In Mandinka kora music, both were legends of their times.
Dawda learned music playing calabash at the feet of his uncle Malamin. Perhaps it was this training firstly as a percussionist, then coming later to the kora on his own terms, that makes his music so distinct and unique.
Dawda Jobarteh's performances honour his past, are rooted in the present whilst looking to the future. From The Gambia to Denmark, Dawda has absorbed a wide range of influences and musical styles. He is as comfortable with a traditional composition dating back hundreds of years as he is to hook up the effects box and dial the volume to '11'.
Dawda has toured extensively with bassist Moussa Diallo and free-jazz drummer Stefan Pasborg. With his own group he has appeared at many festivals including Roskilde (Denmark), Sauti za Busara (Zanzibar) and clubs in New Delhi, India.
