Del & Diho
Country Mayotte Genres band coastal roots Festival Sauti za Busara 2010 Del and Diho provide a perfect example of Indian Ocean music for the 21st century. Original, melodic and imbued with Mahori culture, this is music with roots and passion. Music that will rock you, relax you and make you jump up and celebrate. The uniqueness, energy and quality of this group's repertoire is what made them stand out to the festival selection committee, after all Sauti za Busara is about showcasing African music with African identity.
Del & Diho's music is a product of encounters. Diho is a singer-songwriter and guitarist native to Mayotte, who continues to promote harmony between the rhythms of his island and people of the world. Diho is another celebrated local musician who chose the path of roots music as he was cradled in childhood through the driving local m'godro rhythms and remained fascinated by the traditional instruments of his native island. Del made his first steps as a musician in the late 90s and has dedicated his life to music by working with traditional instruments that had been in danger of disappearing. He is now a master of several of these instruments including the gabousa, dzindzi and mkayamba.
Del and Diho recently joined forces to combine their talents and buoyed by the hypnotic rhythms of dzindzi (small box zither and marimba), from the purest Mayotte roots, in their music you will also hear echoes of the Malagasy rhythms that radiate throughout the Indian Ocean.
Until now the group has toured extensively throughout France and the Indian Ocean but this is their first time to play in Zanzibar. Miss at your peril.
