Jackie Akello is a gifted singer/songwriter and performer from northern Uganda, who sings in Acholi, Luganda, Swahili and English. She has a richly textured organic voice that transverses easily between urban and local sounds.
Akello is well known for several songs including "Amari" (a love ballad), "Samanya" (a gospel hit) and "Apwoyo", that speaks on the suffering of her Acholi people due to warring interventions by the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army).
Akello worked with several bands before going solo. She was a member of Janzi, The Sundowners and then her own Amari Band. She worked with Levixone on their hit gospel single "Samanya". She has also collaborated with Kaweesa, Suzan Kerunen, Lilian Mbabazi, Maurice Kirya, Myko Ouma, Tshila and Kinobe Herbert.
Akello believes “a woman’s dream is the beginning of greatness”. It is from this here she derives hope for a better future, as Akello’s dream is to manifest the greatness of the girl child and the African continent.
She has performed on live stages including World Music Days 2014 and 2017 in Kampala, Blankets and Wine, Bayimba festival and other events. She has also toured in France.
