Mannyok, from the Mauritius island of Rodrigues, are one of its finest music exports. Rhythmic and energetic, their twirling sound is rooted in local traditions, with original compositions and re-interpretations of local standards.
The combo is composed of five musicians from various backgrounds, offering diverse influences to the music mix. Twin brothers Christian & Christophe Casimir, Sydney Alfred, Christel Emilien and Vallen Pierre-Louis play a sweet and delicious harmony of rhythm and bass guitars, accordion, banjo, mandolin, n'goni, drums, conga, 'balié koko', 'tok tok', 'kes mannyok', 'zing zing' and percussion instruments.
Inspired by cassava which is the traditional staple food of Rodrigues, Mannyok is the Creole language name of this highly talented and entertaining group.
This project is supported by an ANT Mobility Grant from Pro Helvetia Johannesburg financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
