Sandra Nankoma is a singer-songwriter and graduate of fine arts from Uganda. Her distinctive vocals cover jazz, soul music and ballads with a unique identity that breaks codes and pushes boundaries.
In 2017, Nankoma was awarded Best Artist, Africa and the Caribbean by the Visa Pour la Creation project. This led to a three-month residency in Paris, where she developed her debut album, Ye’nze. In 2018, 'Kaddugala' won the All Africa Music Award (AFRIMA) for Best Female Artist in 'African Inspirational Music'. The Kaddugala song is an anthem for dark skinned girls to reject skin bleaching and be proud of their skin tone.
Sandra Nankoma believes an artist’s duty is to reflect the times. Convinced that music is the vehicle for social change, she engages her art to contribute to society, especially to causes of women and girls. Her commitment against discrimination and xenophobia has gained recognition on different international platforms including BBC Focus on Africa, TV5Monde France and several African forums and conferences.
Sandra Nankoma’s second album 'The Black Dame’ is due to be released in November 2020.
